Musk Revisits Rift With Google Co-Founder Page During OpenAI Trial

On Tuesday local time, Elon Musk testified in his lawsuit against OpenAI, where what stood out most was not his claim of "charity being stolen," but rather a fractured friendship. After taking an oath, Musk stated that one core reason he co-founded OpenAI was a severe divergence in views on AI safety with Google co-founder Larry Page. According to Musk, when he raised concerns about the potential extinction of humanity due to AI, Page responded that it would be "no problem" as long as AI itself survived, labeling Musk a "speciesist." Musk described this attitude as "borderline crazy." The special significance of this testimony lies in how close these two once were. Fortune magazine included them in its list of "business's best-kept secret friends" in 2016; Musk frequently stayed at Page's home in Palo Alto, and Page even publicly declared he would prefer leaving his assets to Musk over donating them to charity. However, their friendship could not withstand the test posed by OpenAI. In 2015, Musk poached star AI researcher Ilya Sutskever from Google to help establish OpenAI, which deeply betrayed Page, leading him to sever ties thereafter. Musk has recounted this story multiple times before, including to biographer Walter Isaacson, but Tuesday marked his first official statement under oath regarding the matter. There has been no response yet from Page's side. Notably, all of Musk's statements serve this litigation. Yet just last year, during a conversation with tech podcast host Lex Fridman, he expressed hope for repairing the relationship: "We had been friends for a very long time."
