Altman Again Targets Anthropic: AI Safety Disagreements and Competitive Tensions Continue to Escalate

In a recent podcast interview, Sam Altman once again targeted competitor Anthropic, stating that the latter's remarks about OpenAI have done little to ease tensions in the industry. This comment came after a security incident involving Altman himself, further publicizing the competition and disagreements between the two companies. Speaking on the "Core Memory" podcast, Altman said that doomsday rhetoric from some AI labs and criticisms of OpenAI have heightened external anxieties. While he did not specify which particular statement by Anthropic was problematic, he clearly noted that their approach has "not helped." Previously, he had also described internal industry rivalries as resembling "Shakespearean drama" in a blog post. According to law enforcement authorities, a suspect from Texas attempted an attack on Altman by throwing Molotov cocktails at his San Francisco residence while planning more severe harm against him. The suspect has since been arrested and faces multiple charges, including attempted murder. The FBI stated that documents found on the individual contained names of several AI company executives, indicating possible anti-AI motives. Meanwhile, the rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic has continued to intensify over recent months. Founded by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has long emphasized prioritizing AI safety, with its CEO Dario Amodei publicly criticizing what he called performative safety practices within the sector. In response, Altman countered that certain safety claims appear more like fear-based marketing. On product and market fronts, both sides have engaged in repeated indirect confrontations, particularly regarding advertising strategies, government collaborations, and the pacing of model releases. Industry observers note that these differences in technical approaches and safety philosophies are becoming a critical dimension of current competition in the AI field. During the interview, Altman expressed hope that future industry discussions would become more rational, allowing calmer voices to take precedence.
