Google Plans Ads as AI Agents Shop

Google is advancing a plan to preserve its advertising revenue as AI agents increasingly handle online shopping. The company's argument is that bots can complete search and product-finding tasks, while users will still review competing options and weigh sponsored offers. A proposed example described by Google highlighted how insurance choices might present multiple products, varying premiums, deductibles and special discounts. Executives say shopping decisions rarely have a single perfect answer, creating continued room for advertising within agentic search. The remarks follow Alphabet's disclosure that Google's AI mode has driven search volume to record levels, but monetization has not kept pace. That mismatch has intensified investor concern that AI chatbots and autonomous agents could erode Google's core search advertising business. Instead of inserting traditional ads directly into chatbot responses, Google has signaled it prefers formats adapted to AI experiences, such as offers surfaced during travel planning and clearly labeled sponsored links inside AI-generated lists. Alphabet's third-quarter results underscored the financial stakes. Revenue was $127.58 billion, narrowly below the $127.97 billion analysts expected, while earnings per share fell to $2.12 versus about $3.01 estimated, largely due to an $8.2 billion unrealized loss tied to SpaceX. The company's shares dropped about 10% after hours. The episode shows Google's advertising business faces a structural question: whether AI-driven search can generate the same commercial value as the query-driven model that has long funded the company.
