Snapchat ends Spotlight rewards for fully AI-generated videos.

Snapchat has formally updated its Spotlight algorithm to deprioritize fully AI-generated videos, marking a significant shift toward prioritizing human-created content. The update, announced on Friday, adjusts the platform's recommendation systems to ensure only videos produced by real users qualify for Spotlight placement. In a statement explaining the decision, Snap emphasized its commitment to maintaining Spotlight as a space for authentic creativity, personal storytelling, and original perspectives. The company clarified that the restriction applies exclusively to completely synthetic videos. Creators retain full access to Snap's built-in AI creative tools for editing and enhancing human-made content, signaling a measured approach rather than a blanket prohibition. The policy change reflects a growing industry-wide recalibration in response to mounting criticism over low-quality AI output. Major platforms are increasingly revising algorithms and community guidelines to deprioritize synthetic material. LinkedIn recently introduced a reporting feature allowing users to flag posts that appear AI-generated, while Substack deployed detection tools for newsletters. Meta scrapped an Instagram feature that permitted AI modification of public photos following significant backlash. YouTube concurrently updated its monetization guidelines to exclude inauthentic, template-based content and restrict AI personas from discussing sensitive financial or health topics. Snapchat's adjustment aligns with its April statement predicting a reduction in AI content visibility. It also complements recent safety initiatives implemented last month, which restricted 13-to-15-year-old users from sharing Spotlight posts to only their followers, a measure designed to mitigate doxxing risks and enhance platform security for minors. By recalibrating its recommendation engine, Snap aims to restore creator trust and user engagement in a digital landscape increasingly saturated with synthetic media. The adjustment positions the platform alongside leading tech firms that are drawing a clear boundary between AI-assisted tools and fully automated content generation, ensuring that human authorship remains central to community-driven features.
