Google Enables Removal of Visible AI Watermarks
Google has announced it will enable users to disable the visible watermarks attached to artificial intelligence-generated media, including images, videos, and audio. The update, confirmed by Josh Woodward, vice president of Gemini, applies to the Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria models and will be accessible via a new toggle within the Gemini interface, Google Flow video editor, and Google Search in the near future. The company specified that the change affects only the visible overlay; all AI outputs will continue to carry invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA standard metadata to preserve content provenance and transparency. The policy shift addresses growing friction in creative and professional workflows, where prominent watermarks often compromise the usability of AI-generated assets. According to Google, the adjustment maintains a balance between user creative control and safety protocols. Users will be able to adjust the feature through Settings to Media Watermark as the update rolls out over the coming days. In parallel, Google is open-sourcing Credentio, a new developer library designed to integrate local validation mechanisms directly into third-party applications, further supporting transparent AI content handling. This development reflects a broader industry recalibration around AI transparency mandates. Google decision follows recent regulatory pressures, including Anthropic controversial implementation of built-in watermarks for Claude-generated text and documents to align with emerging European Union requirements. By decoupling visible branding from underlying provenance tracking, Google aims to streamline professional adoption of generative tools while maintaining technical safeguards against misinformation.
