Asana acquires no-code agent-builder Stack AI
Asana has acquired Stack AI, a workflow automation company, for $75 million in a strategic move to solidify its position as an AI-native workplace platform. The deal was announced on Thursday afternoon to coincide with Asana's earnings report and investor call. Founders Tony Rosinol and Bernard Aceituno will join Asana as part of the acquisition, bringing their expertise to the expanding team. This acquisition marks a significant step in Asana's broader pivot toward artificial intelligence. The company aims to transform its platform into the operating system for human-agent teams. Stack AI specializes in building AI agents that operate within existing business ecosystems, capable of pulling data from popular tools such as Salesforce, Slack, and Google Workspace. Prior to this deal, Stack AI had secured nearly $20 million in funding, including a $16 million Series A round from investors like Gradient, Epaklon Capital, Lobby VC, LifeX Ventures, and Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch. The startup, a graduate of the Y Combinator Winter 2023 cohort, faced competition from established automation services like Zapier and AI labs including OpenAI and Anthropic. Although Asana is best known for its work management software, it has recently launched several AI-driven products, most notably AI Studio, an agent builder, and AI Teammates, a suite of pre-built automations. While similar tools exist from major technology providers, Asana argues that its deep integration into corporate workflows offers a distinct advantage. This access allows the company to distill specific context and training data that would otherwise remain siloed and unavailable to external agents. The acquisition comes at a challenging time for Asana in the public markets. Since the introduction of ChatGPT, the company has seen its market capitalization drop by more than half. The situation was further complicated by the departure of co-founder Dustin Moskovitz as CEO last March. Despite this decline, Asana's revenues have continued to grow steadily. The new leadership team remains confident that its upcoming human-agent products will help the company rebound from recent market turbulence. Dan Rogers, Asana's CEO, stated that the acquisition accelerates their roadmap and ushers in a new phase of human-agent collaboration. He noted that the company is already seeing momentum with existing AI features, and the addition of Stack AI will enable them to automate complex business processes from end to end. By integrating Stack AI's capabilities, Asana intends to empower users to manage more sophisticated workflows through autonomous agents, further embedding artificial intelligence into the daily operations of businesses worldwide.
