Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Dismisses AI Safety Concerns as Overblown

Nvidia co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang said in an interview with CBS's "Sunday Morning" that he believes the probability of AI causing the end of the world before 2030 is "0%," and called predictions used to create panic "unnecessary and irresponsible." In response to initiatives proposed by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and others to slow down frontier AI development, Huang argued that such judgments lack scientific basis. Huang also opposed creating new AI-specific regulations. He stated that existing U.S. laws on product liability, cybersecurity, and illegal intrusion are already sufficient to address harm caused by AI, and that regulators should first enforce the current system. He emphasized that Nvidia's commercial value is directly tied to whether AI products can be safely deployed, making it in the company's own interest to promote responsible industry development. These remarks once again highlight the divisions within the tech industry over AI risk governance. Those who support stronger regulation argue that recent abnormal model behaviors and cybersecurity incidents suggest that relying solely on corporate self-regulation may be insufficient; Huang, on the other hand, advocates for continuing to accelerate innovation and controlling risks through engineering measures and existing laws. As Nvidia is the primary supplier of AI chips globally, its stance against slowing industry development has also drawn scrutiny regarding conflicts of interest.
