AWS Appoints Ex-DataStax CEO Chet Kapoor as VP of Security Services and Observability to Bolster AI Security Amid Growing Cloud Complexity

Amazon Web Services has hired Chet Kapoor, the former CEO of DataStax, as its new vice president of security services and observability, according to an internal company email obtained by Business Insider. Kapoor will report directly to AWS CEO Matt Garman, who announced the appointment in a companywide message. Garman emphasized that the role is critical as AWS expands its AI offerings and faces growing demands for robust security and observability in increasingly complex cloud environments. Kapoor will work closely with AWS Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Amy Herzog and will lead a team that includes Gee Rittenhouse, Nandini Ramani, Georgia Sitaras, and Brad Marshall, who will now report to him. The appointment comes amid a series of leadership shifts within AWS’s AI and security divisions. In the past year, the company has seen departures of key executives, including VP of AI Matt Wood and VP of generative AI Vasi Philomin, while also bringing in new talent such as former Microsoft executive Julie White, who joined as marketing chief. Kapoor brings a strong track record in technology leadership, most recently serving as Chairman and CEO of DataStax, where he led the development of Astra DB—a database built on Apache Cassandra—and integrated real-time AI capabilities to help enterprises scale AI-driven applications. Prior to DataStax, he was CEO of Apigee, which he transformed into a leading API management platform before its acquisition by Google in 2016. He also held executive positions at IBM and BEA Systems. Garman highlighted Kapoor’s customer-focused approach, deep expertise in AI and platform services, and proven ability to drive innovation and operational excellence. He expressed confidence that Kapoor will help AWS strengthen its security and observability offerings as the company pushes forward with AI-driven product development. The move underscores AWS’s growing focus on securing its AI infrastructure and services, especially as competitors ramp up their own AI and security initiatives. With AI becoming central to cloud strategy, the addition of a seasoned executive with experience in both AI and platform security is a strategic step for AWS.
