Meta launches paid subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp

Meta has officially launched global subscription plans for its flagship applications, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, signaling a strategic shift to diversify revenue beyond advertising. The social media giant introduced consumer tiers known as Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus, priced at $3.99, $3.99, and $2.99 per month respectively. These subscriptions offer power users enhanced features such as profile customization, animated super reactions, and advanced story insights. For instance, Instagram Plus subscribers can see aggregate rewatch counts, extend story lifespan beyond 24 hours, and customize app icons and fonts. WhatsApp Plus focuses on messaging personalization with features like custom themes, ringtones, and premium stickers. Naomi Gleit, Meta's head of product, confirmed that these plans do not replace the existing Meta Verified service, which remains focused on identity verification and impersonation protection. Instead, the new subscriptions aim to provide additional value to heavy users who seek greater social expression and audience analytics. Alongside the consumer rollout, Meta began testing a unified subscription ecosystem called Meta One. This platform will house future offerings for creators, businesses, and AI users. Starting next month, Meta One will launch two AI-focused plans in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia. The Meta One Plus tier costs $7.99 per month, while the Premium tier is $19.99 per month. Both plans provide access to advanced Meta AI capabilities, with the Premium option unlocking higher compute capacity for complex reasoning tasks, expanded video and image generation, and future support for AI glasses. Casual users will continue to access Meta AI for free. Simultaneously, Meta is testing professional plans for creators and businesses in markets including Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh. The Meta One Essential plan, priced at $14.99 monthly, includes a verified badge, impersonation protection, and an enhanced linksheet to connect online presences. The higher-tier Meta One Advanced plan, at $49.99 monthly, adds prominent placement in search results, a bold follow button on Reels, and automated follow invitations to engage followers. This tier also provides superior analytics, competitive insights, optimized scheduling tools, and content theft protection by flagging unauthorized reposts. Meta intends to consolidate these diverse offerings under the Meta One brand, allowing for continuous updates and expansion. The move reflects the company's effort to extract more value from its saturated global user base by monetizing specific features and services beyond its core advertising model. While the company acknowledges these plans are still in testing phases, the strategy indicates a long-term commitment to a multi-tiered subscription economy across its entire product suite.
