Base44 Launches Base 1 LLM; Review Finds Faster, Distinct Output

San Francisco-based vibe-coding platform Base44, a subsidiary of Wix, has officially launched its proprietary large language model, Base 1, positioning itself to differentiate within the competitive AI development tool market. Founder and CEO Maor Shlomo stated that the initiative aims to address the homogenized aesthetic commonly referred to as AI slop, which frequently plagues websites generated by frontier models such as Anthropic Opus 4.8, OpenAI GPT-5.5, and Google Gemini 3. Industry observers have criticized these platforms for producing functionally adequate but visually generic interfaces characterized by beige color palettes, uniform rounded corners, and heavy emoji usage. To evaluate Base 1 against established competitors, an independent assessment compared the new model directly with Anthropic Opus 4.8 on an identical prompt: the creation of an e-commerce landing page for a fictional smart mood lamp. Base 1 immediately diverged from industry norms by deploying a dark blue background paired with bright yellow accents, a deliberate departure from the standardized beige templates. While both outputs retained typical vibe-coding markers like rounded UI elements and decorative emojis, the custom model demonstrated notable efficiency advantages. Base 1 generated the initial site in a fraction of the time required by Opus 4.8 and consumed fewer message credits during iterative feature additions, completing a color-mode expansion with 1.2 credits compared to Opus 4.8’s 1.4 credits. Both platforms utilized the same baseline credit allocation for initial generation. Despite these performance gains, Shlomo acknowledged that Base 1 has not yet achieved its goal of consistently producing radically unique designs. The company plans to implement reinforcement learning techniques to train the model on generating more distinct visual outputs. Currently, model selection remains restricted to Base44’s paid Builder tier and above, which starts at forty dollars monthly, while free-tier users are limited to default system selections. As Base44 integrates this proprietary architecture into its development workflow, the launch signals a strategic pivot toward controlled AI generation, prioritizing design differentiation and operational efficiency over reliance on third-party frontier models. Ongoing updates will focus on refining the model’s creative autonomy ahead of future releases.
