AI and AR Redefine Halloween: 176,000+ Digital Looks Tried on via YouCam Apps, as Millennial Women Lead Global Surge in Virtual Costume Trends

Halloween is undergoing a digital transformation, with augmented reality and artificial intelligence redefining how people celebrate the holiday. Perfect Corp., the company behind the popular YouCam suite of apps, reports that over 176,000 Halloween-themed digital looks were tried on across its platforms during the 2024 Halloween week—marking a record-breaking surge in virtual self-expression. The company’s suite of apps, including YouCam Makeup, YouCam Perfect, YouCam Video, YouCam Enhance, and YouCam AI Pro, offered more than 90 AI and AR-powered effects, avatars, fashion transformations, and creative tools designed specifically for the spooky season. These tools allow users to instantly transform into vampires, witches, zombies, and other fantastical characters with just a few taps. According to internal data, 26% of all digital looks applied in YouCam Makeup during Halloween week were themed around the holiday, highlighting how deeply AR and AI have become embedded in seasonal traditions. Beyond quick try-ons, users saved nearly 13,000 Halloween transformations to their devices—indicating strong intent to share these digital costumes on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. The most popular effects included ghostly glows, cracked zombie skin, and vampire glam in YouCam Makeup, as well as immersive custom backgrounds featuring haunted houses, eerie forests, and glowing pumpkin fields—some of which were used over 13,000 times each. YouCam AI Pro stood out with its AI-powered style transfer feature, instantly turning selfies into cinematic horror-style portraits of legendary creatures. Millennial women emerged as the leading demographic driving this trend, reflecting broader patterns in beauty and fashion tech adoption. These users are not only embracing digital costumes but also sharing them widely, turning Halloween into a global, socially driven event. The phenomenon extends beyond the U.S., with notable growth in international markets. Countries like Argentina saw a 10% year-over-year increase in Halloween app usage, while Japan recorded an 8% rise—indicating that digital Halloween celebrations are gaining traction worldwide. This surge underscores a larger cultural shift: AR and AI are no longer just novelty tools but essential components of everyday self-expression. With generative AI now integrated into everyday apps, users can create, edit, and share content faster and more creatively than ever before. Alice Chang, Founder and CEO of Perfect Corp., said, “Halloween has always been about transformation, and AR and AI have unlocked an entirely new dimension of creativity. These tools make participation more accessible, more shareable, and more global, showing how technology is changing not only the way we celebrate, but also how we connect through culture.” Perfect Corp., a global leader in AI and AR innovation, has over 1.1 billion downloads across its YouCam apps and serves more than 800 brand partners worldwide. Its technology powers virtual try-ons for beauty, fashion, and accessories, and continues to push the boundaries of how people interact with digital content. As digital celebrations become mainstream, Halloween stands as a powerful example of how technology is reshaping cultural traditions—turning a single night of fun into a year-round, global movement of creative connection.
