Flood Extent Forecasting
Flood extent prediction is the task of forecasting a binary two-dimensional flood extent map (water vs. non-water) based on input drivers and forcing conditions. This task focuses on impact and extent modeling, assuming atmospheric states (such as precipitation) are known inputs, to distinguish from upstream challenges like weather forecasting. It complements tasks involving time-series prediction of river runoff and post-flood mapping, aiming to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of flood warnings and risk management.
