Eclipse Soundscapes ESID#657

The Eclipse Soundscapes ESID#657 dataset is an audio collection of soundscapes recorded during the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024. It was released by Eclipse Soundscapes, a citizen science project funded by NASA. Its purpose is to provide raw recording data on environmental acoustic changes and animal vocalization behaviors during eclipses, supporting research into ecoacoustic analysis, ecological effects of eclipses, and quality assessment of citizen science data.

All audio files within this dataset were captured at monitoring station ESID#657 (located at latitude 37.4843137.48431^\circ37.48431 N, longitude 89.08989.089^\circ89.089 W) using AudioMoth devices. Recordings cover the day of the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, along with several days before and after that date (April 6–11, 2024 UTC). They have been packaged into six ZIP archives organized by recording date. Accompanying materials include file lists, site-specific eclipse timing information, and comprehensive documentation such as a full data dictionary.

Dataset Composition:

  • Audio Data: Six daily ZIP packages containing uncompressed WAV recordings alongside corresponding configuration parameters used per session
  • Metadata Files: file_list.csv listing all contained assets; total_eclipse_data.csv providing geographic coordinates plus five key phases/times associated with totality observed locally
  • Documentation & Dictionaries: Four separate CSV-based dictionaries (file_list_data_dict.csv, CONFIG_data_dict.csv, 2024_total_eclipse_data_data_dict.csv, WAV_data_dict.csv) together with operational guides including the official AudioMoth User Manual, training notes prepared specifically for volunteer contributors ("Volunteer Scientists"), technical reports detailing stages zero through three underpinning curation practices (“Stage 0-3 Reports”), presented here exclusively via downloadable Portable Document Format versions
