Kirsty Craig: AI-Expertein treibt BlackRocks Investitionen mit KI voran
Kirsty Craig, Head of Research, Data and AI Strategy for Portfolio Management Technology at BlackRock, has emerged as a pivotal figure in the firm’s AI-driven transformation. Over her 15-year tenure, Craig has served as a crucial bridge between investment professionals and engineers, translating complex technological capabilities into actionable insights for portfolio managers. Her ability to align strategic vision with technical execution earned her the prestigious title of Tech Fellow—one of only 24 elite distinctions awarded across BlackRock’s global engineering workforce. Announced on December 16, Craig was among five new fellows recognized for accelerating innovation in investment processes. Notably, she is the only woman among this year’s cohort and the sole fellow not embedded within Aladdin, BlackRock’s flagship risk and analytics platform. Craig’s most impactful contribution lies in the development of Asimov, an agentic AI platform unveiled at BlackRock’s investor day in June. Designed as a “virtual investment analyst,” Asimov leverages artificial intelligence to automate research workflows, drastically reducing the time required for fundamental equity analysis—once a months-long endeavor. By integrating AI into core investment processes, Asimov enables faster, data-driven decision-making, positioning BlackRock at the forefront of AI adoption in asset management. Craig’s leadership in building this platform underscores her role as a pioneer in applying generative AI to active investing. Her influence extends beyond product development. As a leader of a cross-functional team of around 60 engineers and data scientists, Craig operates horizontally across investment divisions, identifying high-impact innovations in data, AI, and technology that can elevate research outcomes. Her career spanning Edinburgh, San Francisco, and Philadelphia has cultivated a rare skill set in horizontal leadership—navigating diverse teams and cultures while fostering collaboration between investors and technologists. Craig emphasizes that effective communication and trust-building are central to her success: “They often talk above or below each other. My role is to translate and align.” As a visible female leader in a male-dominated tech environment, Craig sees her recognition as both an honor and a responsibility. With women comprising 43.8% of BlackRock’s global workforce and 33.1% of senior leadership (as of January 2025), her elevation reflects progress—but also highlights the need for continued inclusion. Active in BlackRock’s women and LGBTQ+ resource groups, Craig credits these communities with sharpening her communication, networking, and presentation skills. She hopes her position will inspire junior female technologists to pursue leadership roles. Industry observers praise Craig’s unique blend of technical depth and strategic empathy. Nish Ajitsaria, co-head of Aladdin product engineering, describes her team as “at the tip of the spear” in AI innovation. Looking ahead, Craig’s focus remains on expanding agentic AI beyond equity research into fixed income and macro investing—areas where AI could unlock new efficiencies and insights. Beyond her professional achievements, Craig is preparing for a personal milestone: the birth of her partner’s child in early January. With celebrations kept low-key—limited to a meal and essential baby items—she anticipates a more joyful milestone post-January 6. Her dual journey—leading AI innovation while embracing life’s next chapter—illustrates the evolving role of tech leaders in shaping both finance and society.
