OpenAI Explores 'Sign in with ChatGPT' for Third-Party Apps, Gauging Developer Interest

10日前

OpenAI is considering a new feature that would allow users to sign in to third-party apps using their ChatGPT accounts. This development was highlighted on a web page published by the company on Tuesday, where it invited developers to express interest in integrating this service into their applications. With ChatGPT boasting around 600 million monthly active users, OpenAI aims to leverage this vast user base to broaden its reach into various consumer sectors, including online shopping, social media, and personal devices. By implementing a “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature, OpenAI hopes to compete more effectively with tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, which offer a wide range of online services, including convenient sign-in options for third-party apps. Earlier this month, OpenAI introduced a preview of the “Sign in with ChatGPT” experience for developers in Codex CLI, an open-source AI coding tool designed for terminal usage. This feature allowed developers to link their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their API accounts. To incentivize participation, Plus users received $5 in API credits, while Pro users received $50. OpenAI appears to be targeting a diverse range of companies for this integration. The developer interest form requests information about the app’s user base, ranging from small startups with fewer than 1,000 weekly users to large enterprises with over 100 million weekly users. The form also inquires about current pricing strategies for AI features and whether the developer is already a customer of the OpenAI API. CEO Sam Altman had previously mentioned in 2023 that the company might explore a “sign in with OpenAI” feature in 2024. However, recent developments suggest that OpenAI is now more actively working on this capability in 2025. While the exact timeline for when the sign-in feature will be available to ChatGPT users remains unknown, it is clear that OpenAI is taking significant steps toward creating a more integrated ecosystem. Despite the company's efforts, OpenAI did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for additional details on the project. This feature, if successfully implemented, could significantly enhance the user experience and streamline access to a variety of third-party applications, further cementing OpenAI's position as a leading force in the AI landscape.
