Port of Gulfport Launches Continuous Subsea Surveillance with Ocean Aero’s Triton AUSV to Enhance Security and Infrastructure Monitoring

On May 1st, the Port of Gulfport will launch a groundbreaking continuous autonomous subsea surveillance program using Ocean Aero’s advanced Triton Autonomous Underwater and Surface Vehicle (AUSV). The Triton AUSV, equipped with bathymetry sensors, side-scan sonar, and magnetometers, will conduct ongoing scans to produce high-resolution datasets. These datasets will enable real-time change detection, allowing the port to identify and address issues promptly. For example, after hurricanes, which are common in the Gulf region, the Triton can quickly assess the harbor and channel for debris and potential threats, ensuring ships can resume operations safely and efficiently. Jon Nass, CEO and Executive Director of the Port of Gulfport, emphasized the importance of this technology, stating it enables the port to maintain underwater assets with the same level of vigilance as those visible above water. Kelly Lucas, Vice President for Research at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), highlighted another key aspect of the project: data analysis and prediction. USM’s Gulf Blue® initiative, which fosters innovation among Gulf Coast companies, will play a critical role in this collaboration. Students and researchers will analyze the data collected by the Triton, identifying subtle shifts that could evolve into significant problems over time. “By catching these early, we can provide unprecedented situational awareness and support proactive maintenance efforts,” said Lucas. Kevin Decker, CEO of Ocean Aero, underscored the timeliness and relevance of the technology. “Ocean Aero’s Triton AUSV is equipped with the precise instruments needed to ensure the safety of underwater assets at a fraction of traditional monitoring costs.” Decker noted that the technology is already being used by the U.S. Navy and international allies for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions (ISR) and mine countermeasure (MCM) activities. Additionally, large oil and gas companies use the Triton to inspect pipelines and detect anomalies on the ocean floor. Ms. Bobbie Thompson of the U.S. Navy's Naval Oceanographic Office stated, “We are encouraged by the ongoing advancements in unmanned maritime systems that can enhance port security and monitoring of critical subsea infrastructure.” U.S. Senator Roger Wicker commended the effort, saying, “This technology represents a major enhancement for Mississippi’s port operations, offering expansive undersea monitoring and surveillance to improve U.S. security along the Gulf Coast.” U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith echoed Wicker’s sentiments, adding, “The non-stop subsea surveillance deployed at the Port of Gulfport sets a standard that could be replicated nationally, making ports safer and more efficient.” Congressman Mike Ezell lauded Ocean Aero for bringing state-of-the-art innovation to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, noting that the Triton AUSV will provide real-time, high-resolution data to protect critical infrastructure and support smooth port operations. The Triton AUSV's ability to sail on the surface and submerge to depths of up to 100 meters is a unique feature that sets it apart from other surveillance vehicles. It can operate for extended periods, collecting data continuously and autonomously, reducing the need for human intervention and lowering costs.
