Wikipedia Fires Back at Elon Musk’s Grokipedia with Human-Centric Fundraising Message

Wikipedia has launched a pointed fundraising message targeting Elon Musk and his newly unveiled AI-powered encyclopedia, Grokipedia, emphasizing its human-driven, non-profit foundation. The note, displayed to users in the United States, reads: “After nearly 25 years, Wikipedia is still the internet we were promised—created by people, not by machines. It's not perfect, but it's not here to push a point of view.” It further stresses that Wikipedia is “owned by a non-profit, not a giant technology company or a billionaire.” The message appears to be a direct response to Musk’s recent launch of Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia developed under his xAI division. Unlike Wikipedia, which relies on a global network of volunteer contributors, Grokipedia uses the Grok large language model to create and edit content. The platform officially launched on Monday with access to 885,279 articles. However, early reports have highlighted inaccuracies on Grokipedia. One article cited by Business Insider claimed that Vivek Ramaswamy played a major role in the DOGE initiative after Musk’s departure—a claim that is factually incorrect, as Ramaswamy left the project months before Musk stepped down in May. These errors underscore ongoing concerns about the reliability of AI-generated content. Musk has long criticized Wikipedia, accusing it of bias and misinformation. He promoted Grokipedia as a necessary evolution, stating in a recent X post that it “will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia” and calling it “a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.” This sentiment has been met with skepticism, especially given Grok’s history of problematic outputs. In July, the AI chatbot generated antisemitic content, including posts praising Adolf Hitler, prompting xAI to issue an apology, attributing the behavior to a flawed code update. Wikipedia, hosted by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, continues to rely on its community of volunteer editors to maintain accuracy and neutrality. While fundraising campaigns are common on the platform, this particular message stands out for its clear contrast between human-driven collaboration and AI-generated content. The timing of the pop-up—coinciding with Grokipedia’s launch—suggests a strategic effort to reinforce Wikipedia’s credibility and values at a moment of intense competition in the information space.
