EdgeConneX Expands in Japan with 350MW Renewable-Powered Data Center Platform in Greater Osaka to Fuel AI and Cloud Growth
EdgeConneX has announced the expansion of its data center platform in Japan’s Greater Osaka region, establishing a 350MW capacity across two facilities. The latest development includes the acquisition of a second site in the Yawata area, adding 150MW of power capacity to the previously announced 200MW project. This marks a major milestone in the company’s rapid entry into the Japanese market, with both facilities set to be powered entirely by renewable energy. The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 7th, held in collaboration with Keihan Real Estate, a key member of the Keihan Group. The group, with over a century of experience in transportation and real estate, is actively developing its core business in infrastructure, retail, and leisure services. This partnership underscores the growing alignment between Japan’s industrial leaders and the digital infrastructure needs of the future. The first project, a 200MW data center, was announced in January 2025 and is scheduled to begin construction in early 2026, with the first phase expected to launch by the fourth quarter of 2027. Within just over six months of entering the Japanese market, EdgeConneX has secured a total of 350MW of capacity, positioning itself as one of the largest data center operators in the Kansai region. Masahiko Inoue, Head of Japan for EdgeConneX, emphasized the strategic importance of the expansion: “We are thrilled to see our vision for Japan taking shape so quickly. These facilities will not only meet the rising demand for advanced IT infrastructure but also help solidify Japan’s role as a global leader in cloud and AI technologies.” The new data centers are designed to support high-density workloads, with the ability to handle up to 600 kW per rack through EdgeConneX’s Ingenuity product suite. This makes them ideal for the most demanding AI and machine learning applications, including deployments using NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel technologies. Sustainability remains a core priority. EdgeConneX is committed to achieving carbon, waste, and water neutrality by 2030. All its facilities are currently powered by renewable energy, and the company has earned top rankings in Structure Research’s 2023 and 2024 State of Environmental Impact reports for both efficiency and transparency. Sam Lee, Managing Director of Market & Commercial Development, highlighted the significance of the move: “Japan’s digital economy is accelerating, and our rapid expansion reflects our ability to deliver scalable, reliable, and environmentally responsible infrastructure in a high-growth, power-constrained market. These projects are a clear signal of our long-term commitment to Japan’s digital transformation.” With its strategic location in Greater Osaka—a key logistics and technology hub—EdgeConneX’s platform is poised to serve a wide range of industries, including cloud providers, AI developers, content delivery networks, and telecommunications companies.
