Oxford and Google Expand AI Access for Students and Faculty with Gemini for Education and NotebookLM

Google is partnering with the University of Oxford to provide students and faculty with access to its most advanced AI tools, including Gemini for Education and NotebookLM, to enhance learning, teaching, research, and collaboration. Following a successful pilot program—where 85% of participants reported increased productivity and nearly 75% said the tools improved their effectiveness—Oxford will now offer Pro licenses to staff and students through their departments or colleges, accessible via the university’s secure Google for Education workspace. All Oxford staff and students can now use Gemini for Education and NotebookLM across the university’s Google Workspace environment. Gemini for Education features Guided Learning, a personal learning companion that promotes deeper understanding by asking probing questions and offering step-by-step guidance, rather than simply delivering answers. The university has also granted secure access to Gemini 3, Google’s latest model, which is designed with input from education experts and grounded in learning science. Gemini Pro licenses include Deep Research, an AI-powered academic assistant capable of creating multi-step research plans, scanning hundreds of relevant web sources, analyzing findings, and generating comprehensive, multi-page reports with proper citations. These capabilities are expected to significantly support Oxford’s research community, streamline grant writing, and accelerate discovery. Alwyn Collinson, Head of the AI Competency Centre at Oxford, highlighted the importance of responsible AI use: “Many of our staff and students are already exploring AI. This partnership gives us secure access to leading AI models, backed by training and guidance to ensure they’re used safely and effectively. These tools will empower our researchers and academics to harness AI’s potential to drive high-impact research, foster innovation, and help address major global challenges.” The pilot program identified key applications, including accelerating research, refining grant proposals, and boosting overall productivity—essential functions for a world-class research institution. Through this collaboration, Oxford and Google are jointly advancing AI literacy and skill development, preparing students for a future where AI is deeply embedded in work and learning. By offering a curated selection of top-tier AI tools, Oxford is reinforcing its role as a global leader in education and research. The initiative ensures that students, faculty, and staff are equipped not just to use AI, but to shape its future—becoming the creators, collaborators, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.
