Google NotebookLM Launches Deep Research Feature and Expanded File Support

Google is expanding the capabilities of its AI-powered research and note-taking tool, NotebookLM, by integrating its agentic AI feature Deep Research and adding support for new file types. Starting next week, all users will gain access to Deep Research within NotebookLM, enhancing the tool’s ability to conduct complex, automated research with minimal user effort. Deep Research functions like a dedicated researcher, capable of formulating a research plan based on a user’s question, then autonomously searching the web for relevant, high-quality sources. Users can choose between two research styles: “Fast Research,” which delivers rapid results, and “Deep Research,” which performs an in-depth analysis to uncover authoritative and comprehensive information. Before the research begins, users receive a clear research plan outlining the approach. During the process, users can continue to add sources—such as PDFs, Drive files, or spreadsheets—while Deep Research works in the background. This allows users to build a rich, evolving knowledge base without disrupting their workflow. Once completed, the final report includes citations to articles, websites, or academic papers, which users can easily copy into their NotebookLM notebooks. This feature is designed to streamline research-heavy tasks, such as writing reports, preparing presentations, or studying complex topics, by reducing the time spent manually gathering and verifying sources. In addition to Deep Research, NotebookLM is now compatible with several new file formats. Users can now link Google Sheets directly to generate insights from structured data, such as statistics or trends. They can also add files from Google Drive using simple URL links instead of uploading them, making the process faster and more efficient. Support for Microsoft Word documents in .docx format has also been added, broadening the range of content users can analyze. These updates follow a series of recent enhancements to NotebookLM. In May, Google launched mobile apps for Android and iOS, bringing the tool to smartphones and tablets. Earlier this year, the platform introduced Video Overviews, which transform dense documents—like PDFs, notes, or images—into visual summaries. This complements the existing Audio Overviews feature, which turns documents into AI-generated podcasts, ideal for reviewing course materials, legal briefs, or meeting notes. Deep Research has already been integrated into other Google Workspace products, including Gmail, Drive, and Google Chat, allowing Gemini to draw context from a user’s emails, files, and chat history. This new integration with NotebookLM extends that capability, enabling users to conduct research that is both context-aware and deeply personalized. The updates reflect Google’s ongoing effort to position NotebookLM as a central hub for AI-assisted knowledge work. By combining automated research, multi-source analysis, and support for diverse file types, the platform aims to help users organize, understand, and act on information more effectively. As AI tools become increasingly central to productivity, Google’s move to unify its research and content management features signals a shift toward more intelligent, seamless workflows. With these new capabilities, NotebookLM is evolving from a simple note-taker into a powerful, all-in-one research assistant—helping users navigate the growing volume of digital information with greater speed and depth.
