Nvidia's Jensen Huang Vows OpenAI Deal Is On Track Amid Rumors of Tensions

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has firmly denied reports of tension between the chipmaker and OpenAI, stating that their planned partnership remains "on track." Speaking with CNBC’s Jim Cramer on Tuesday, Huang dismissed speculation about any issues, saying, "There's no drama involved. Everything's on track." The full interview is set to air later that day on "Mad Money." The comments come amid growing uncertainty about a high-profile agreement announced in September, when Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled a letter of intent for Nvidia to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI. The deal would see OpenAI build AI infrastructure powered by Nvidia’s technology, requiring up to 10 gigawatts of electricity. However, an SEC filing in November indicated the deal had not yet been finalized, sparking concerns that the announcement was more symbolic than substantive. Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal reported the deal was "on ice," prompting a 3.4% drop in Nvidia’s stock—contributing to a broader tech sector decline. Nvidia shares are now down 13% from their October peak. Huang clarified on Tuesday that Nvidia plans to invest in OpenAI’s upcoming fundraising round, which could become the largest private funding round in history. "We will invest in the next round," he said. "There is no question about that." He also confirmed that Nvidia intends to participate in any future OpenAI funding rounds and expressed interest in being involved in an eventual OpenAI IPO. OpenAI has relied on Nvidia’s graphics processing units since its founding to train and deploy its AI models, including ChatGPT. But in recent months, Altman has publicly acknowledged that OpenAI faces a shortage of chips to meet rising demand. He has also pursued deals with Nvidia’s competitors, including AMD, Broadcom, and Cerebras, to secure additional computing capacity. In a post on X on Monday, Altman addressed the speculation directly: "We love working with NVIDIA and they make the best AI chips in the world. We hope to be a gigantic customer for a very long time. I don't get where all this insanity is coming from."
