Liberty Global and Google Cloud Forge Five-Year AI Partnership to Transform European Telecom Services and Drive Innovation
Liberty Global and Google Cloud have announced a five-year strategic partnership aimed at accelerating Liberty Global’s digital transformation and embedding artificial intelligence at scale across its European operations. The collaboration will leverage Google Cloud’s AI capabilities, including its Gemini models, to enhance customer experiences, optimize network performance, and unlock new growth opportunities. Under the agreement, Liberty Global’s 80 million connections across Europe—including its core brands Virgin Media O2 in the UK, Telenet in Belgium, VodafoneZiggo in the Netherlands, Virgin Media in Ireland, and Sunrise in Switzerland—will gain access to AI-powered services and devices. Gemini models will be integrated into Liberty Global’s Horizon TV platform to improve content search and discovery with more conversational, intelligent interactions. The technology will also be applied to customer care channels to boost responsiveness and first-contact resolution rates. The partnership builds on existing collaborations and expands into new areas, including Liberty’s Growth and Services portfolios. Notably, Google Cloud has become the Principal Partner and Official AI Partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, supporting innovation across the motorsport series. Additionally, the alliance will explore integrating Google Cloud services into Liberty Global’s data centers, particularly through its Atlas Edge joint venture, to meet growing customer demand and improve infrastructure efficiency. The collaboration focuses on three key pillars. First, AI-driven customer value will be enhanced through smarter TV experiences and expanded access to Google products such as Pixel devices, smart home solutions, Google Home Premium, Chromebooks, and YouTube Premium. Liberty Global’s operating companies plan to launch their own smart home offerings in the coming years. Second, cloud optimization will drive improvements in network scalability, security, and data sovereignty. The companies will develop autonomous network operations that proactively detect and resolve issues, reducing manual intervention and improving service reliability. They will also explore ways to optimize network capacity and potentially make excess data center space available to Google Cloud. Third, new growth opportunities will be pursued in the SME market, with joint go-to-market initiatives to promote cloud, cybersecurity, and AI solutions. Liberty Global will also investigate data monetization strategies, ensuring strong security and privacy protections, while expanding into areas like Formula E brand activations and Liberty Blume’s digital transformation services. Mike Fries, CEO of Liberty Global, said the partnership marks a major step in modernizing infrastructure and creating new value for customers and stakeholders. He emphasized the role of AI and cloud technology in driving innovation across the company’s European operations. Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud EMEA, highlighted the goal of using technology to simplify complexity and deliver tangible benefits to customers and partners. She underscored Google Cloud’s commitment to enabling transformative outcomes through its integrated AI and infrastructure stack. The partnership reflects a broader trend of telecom providers deepening ties with cloud giants to stay competitive in an AI-driven era.
