Obsidian Solutions Group Wins SBIR Direct-to-Phase II Contract for AI-Powered Wearable Multi-Threat Detection System SensXR to Enhance Air Force Mission Capabilities
Obsidian Solutions Group LLC has been awarded a SBIR Direct-to-Phase II contract by AFWERX to advance its SensXR wearable AI technology, designed to enable rapid multi-threat detection in high-stakes operational environments. The project, titled “SensXR: Accelerating Decision Cycles with Low-SWaP Wearable Edge-AI Sensor Fusion & PPE-Compatible HMI for Multi-Threat Detection,” aims to address critical challenges faced by the Department of the Air Force (DAF). The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the SBIR and STTR process, reducing bureaucratic delays and accelerating the path from proposal to award. This initiative expands opportunities for small businesses and fosters innovation by minimizing administrative overhead and improving contract execution. The DAF launched its Open Topic SBIR/STTR program in 2018 to broaden the scope of funded technologies, and with this new contract, Obsidian Solutions Group will begin work on August 26, 2025, to develop a next-generation wearable system that integrates edge artificial intelligence, sensor fusion, and a human-machine interface compatible with protective equipment. The goal is to enhance situational awareness, reduce decision-making time, and improve warfighter safety in complex, high-risk scenarios. “At Obsidian, we are dedicated to delivering innovative solutions that directly support the warfighter and strengthen our nation’s defense,” said Jim Wiley, President and Co-Founder of Obsidian Solutions Group. “This partnership with AFWERX allows us to advance SensXR technology and accelerate decision-making in complex environments, ultimately enhancing mission success and protecting those who serve.” Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Obsidian Solutions Group is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) that specializes in IT transformation, modernization, and software development for the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of State (DoS), the Intelligence Community (IC), and private sector clients. The company integrates cutting-edge technologies to deliver mission-critical solutions that counter evolving global threats, with a strong commitment to integrity, innovation, and responsiveness. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) serves as the primary scientific research and development center for the Department of the Air Force. With over 12,500 personnel across nine technology areas and operations in more than 40 locations worldwide, AFRL leads the development of affordable, next-generation warfighting technologies for air, space, and cyberspace operations. Its work spans from fundamental research to advanced technology development. AFWERX, the innovation arm of the DAF and a directorate within AFRL, connects the Air Force with small businesses and startups to rapidly transition emerging technologies into operational use. With approximately 370 personnel across five hubs and sites and an annual budget of $1.4 billion, AFWERX has executed over 6,200 contracts worth more than $4.7 billion since 2019, strengthening the U.S. defense industrial base and accelerating the delivery of innovative capabilities to warfighters.
