Sora’s Android Launch Surges with Nearly Half a Million Downloads on First Day, Outpacing iOS Debut Amid Growing AI Video Competition

Sora’s Android launch has made a strong debut, with the AI video app from OpenAI recording nearly half a million downloads on its first day in the Google Play Store. According to app intelligence firm Appfigures, the app reached an estimated 470,000 installs across the markets where it was available, marking a significant milestone for the product. This performance far exceeds the initial iOS launch, which saw around 110,000 downloads on its first day—up from an earlier estimate of 56,000. The revised figure reflects more accurate data as the app’s performance has been tracked over time. Of those iOS downloads, approximately 69,300 were from the U.S. The Android version, however, launched in a broader set of countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, and was made available to all users without an invite, unlike the initial iOS rollout, which was limited to the U.S. and Canada and required an invitation. The Android launch saw 296,000 U.S. installs, highlighting sustained user interest even after the initial buzz from the iOS release. Sora’s first-day Android downloads were more than four times the number of iOS downloads on launch day, and the app has since become a top performer, ranking as the No. 4 app in the U.S. App Store’s iPhone Top Free Charts. Sora allows users to generate AI-powered videos using simple text prompts. A standout feature, called Cameos, enables users to animate themselves and their friends within the videos, adding a personalized touch. The app’s interface is designed for mobile, with a scrollable, TikTok-style vertical feed that showcases user-generated content, making it easy to discover and share videos. Since its debut, Sora has quickly become a breakout hit, capturing widespread attention in the AI and creative communities. The app’s success underscores growing demand for accessible, high-quality AI video tools. It also comes as Meta AI has recently launched its own mobile app in Europe, following a U.S. debut earlier this year, intensifying competition in the AI-powered content creation space.
