T-Mobile to Launch AI-Powered Live Call Translation Across 50 Languages This Spring

T-Mobile is set to launch a new AI-powered feature called Live Translation, enabling real-time translation of phone calls into more than 50 languages. The service will enter beta testing this spring, with registration now open for eligible T-Mobile customers. “Some of the biggest barriers wireless customers face are the simplest ones — like being able to understand each other,” said T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan. “By bringing real-time AI directly into our network, we’re delivering more than connectivity — turning conversations into community, starting with Live Translation.” Unlike other translation tools that require specific apps or devices, Live Translation operates at the network level, meaning users don’t need to download software or own a particular phone. The feature is activated by a T-Mobile user during a call, and it works across a wide range of devices and network types. According to John Saw, T-Mobile’s President of Technology and CTO, the service relies on a Voice over LTE (VoLTE) connection, which ensures reliable performance on both 4G LTE and 5G networks. “The key requirement is a VoLTE connection, which allows the service to operate reliably across a wide range of devices and network conditions,” Saw explained. “That flexibility is important because it ensures Live Translation works for customers wherever they are, not just when they’re on the latest network technology. Live Translation works over VoLTE, VoNR, and VoWiFi.” Beta participants can activate the feature by dialing *87 at no cost during the trial period. T-Mobile plans to roll out voice activation in the coming months, allowing users to say “Hey T-Mobile” to enable translation. The feature only functions during active calls and does not record or store call content. “The service is designed to translate conversations in real time and then move on, without storing the content of those calls,” Saw said. T-Mobile has not yet disclosed whether Live Translation will be a paid service when it launches to the general public later this year. The company emphasized that the beta is a critical step in refining the experience before a wider rollout.
