Meta’s AI Chief Alexandr Wang pitches talent with compute power, elite team, and bold vision for superintelligence

Meta’s AI chief Alexandr Wang has laid out his recruitment pitch for top AI talent, emphasizing four key factors: the company’s massive compute power, its concentration of elite talent, the scale of its team, and a bold vision for the future. Speaking on the tech talk show TBPN, Wang asserted that Meta has all the necessary resources to achieve superintelligence and that there are no fundamental obstacles standing in the way. He highlighted Meta’s ability to invest heavily in infrastructure, noting that the company has adjusted its capital expenditure guidance to between $66 billion and $72 billion for the year—up from $64 billion previously—reflecting its commitment to building the computational backbone needed for next-generation AI. “We have the business model to support building literally hundreds of billions of dollars of compute,” Wang said, underscoring Meta’s long-term financial capacity to scale. Next, Wang pointed to the quality of Meta’s team, describing it as “incredibly talent-dense.” He emphasized that only individuals in the “very top handful” of AI researchers across other labs would be considered for Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Though the current team is around 100 people—smaller than those at OpenAI or Google DeepMind—Wang argued that density and quality outweigh size. He believes this focus on elite talent will be a major differentiator. Wang also outlined the structure of MSL, which includes dedicated groups for research, product development, and infrastructure. He previously shared this setup in an internal memo, signaling a deliberate approach to integrating innovation with real-world deployment. Perhaps most striking was his emphasis on boldness. “We’re going to be incredibly bold,” he said, adding that Meta’s vast product ecosystem gives it the unique ability to deploy superintelligence at a global scale—reaching every person on the planet. Meta’s aggressive hiring strategy has drawn attention, especially after it offered $100 million signing bonuses to secure top AI scientists. The recruitment of Wang himself was a major move, tied to a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, which gave Meta a 49% stake and brought Wang into the company. However, in recent weeks, Meta paused its hiring spree. The company cited “basic organizational planning” as the reason, explaining that it was reorganizing after recent rapid growth and completing annual budgeting. The freeze includes a temporary halt on internal team transfers, though the duration remains unclear. Despite the pause, the company continues to position itself as a major player in the race to build the next generation of AI.
