Altman and Musk's Public Feud Intensifies Over OpenAI Lawsuit and AI Safety Claims

Sam Altman and Elon Musk have intensified their public feud, exchanging sharp criticisms in a series of posts on X, turning their ongoing legal dispute into a high-profile battle for public perception. The clash began Tuesday morning when Musk posted a warning: “Don’t let your loved ones use ChatGPT,” in response to claims that OpenAI’s chatbot had been linked to the deaths of children and adults since its launch in 2022. Altman quickly responded, defending both ChatGPT and OpenAI’s commitment to user safety. “It is genuinely hard; we need to protect vulnerable users, while also making sure our guardrails still allow all of our users to benefit from our tools,” he wrote. He then pivoted to critique Tesla’s Autopilot system, calling it dangerously flawed. “I only ever rode in a car using it once, some time ago, but my first thought was that it was far from a safe thing for Tesla to have released,” Altman said. He added a jab at Musk’s AI model, Grok, saying, “I won’t even start on some of the Grok decisions.” The comment appeared to reference concerns over the model’s content and reliability. Altman’s post concluded with a pointed reference to Musk’s legal stance: “You take ‘every accusation is a confession’ so far,” suggesting Musk’s own actions contradict his claims of innocence. Neither Altman nor Musk’s representatives responded to requests for comment from Business Insider. The public exchange follows months of legal tension between the two tech leaders. Musk sued Altman and other OpenAI executives, alleging they misled him when the company transitioned from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity, diverging from its original mission of developing AI for the public good. Musk claims he contributed $38 million to OpenAI during its early days as a nonprofit, and argues that the shift in structure violated his expectations and the organization’s founding principles. The dispute has drawn widespread attention, highlighting deep divisions over the future of AI, corporate accountability, and the role of transparency in technology development. As the legal battle continues, the public sparring on X underscores how personal and ideological stakes have become in the race to shape the future of artificial intelligence.
