The internet is evolving from a collection of static pages into a dynamic ecosystem driven by autonomous AI agents, and Vercel is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation. CEO Guillermo Rauch says the company is building what he calls the "AI cloud"—a new kind of infrastructure designed specifically to host and manage intelligent agents that can plan, reason, and act independently. In an interview published by TBPN on Monday, Rauch declared that "the world is going from pages to agents," signaling a fundamental shift in how software is built and deployed. He envisions a future where every application becomes AI-native, with the agent emerging as the core building block of cloud computing. To support this vision, Vercel is developing new frameworks and developer tools tailored for agentic software. The company, known for powering millions of web applications, recently raised $300 million at a $9.3 billion valuation in September to accelerate its efforts in this space. Rauch believes many organizations will skip traditional digital transformation and move straight to AI-driven operations. He pointed out that these agents are already changing how infrastructure functions—running for extended periods, sometimes hours or even days, continuously processing, thinking, and generating output. This shift demands new approaches to compute, storage, and resource management. Jeanne DeWitt Grosser, Vercel’s Chief Operating Officer, shared in a separate report to Business Insider that the company is training AI agents on the workflows of its top performers. One such agent, dubbed the "lead agent," now handles tasks previously managed by multiple sales development representatives. As a result, Vercel reduced a 10-person team to just one human and a single AI agent. While Rauch did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, the company’s actions reflect a broader industry trend. Tech giants are racing to lay the groundwork for an agentic internet, where AI systems autonomously navigate, interact, and execute tasks across platforms. OpenAI recently launched Atlas, a ChatGPT-powered browser that combines web browsing with agent capabilities, enabling users to book appointments or fill shopping carts without manual input. In April, Google introduced Agent2Agent, a protocol allowing AI agents to communicate securely and coordinate actions across different systems. Anthropic launched its Model Context Protocol (MCP) in November, connecting agents directly to backend systems like databases and pricing engines, replacing fragmented API integrations. Meanwhile, Cloudflare announced plans to introduce NET Dollar, a US dollar-backed stablecoin designed to facilitate secure, automated transactions within the emerging agentic web. Together, these developments suggest that the next phase of the internet won’t be defined by websites or apps—but by intelligent, self-directed agents working behind the scenes to deliver seamless, autonomous experiences. Vercel’s push to build the AI cloud is part of that larger movement, aiming to become the foundational platform for this new era.
