Dr. Adil Haider Appointed First Chief AI Officer at Carle Illinois College of Medicine to Drive Ethical, Patient-Centered AI Innovation
Dr. Adil Haider, a world-renowned surgeon-scientist, academic leader, and founder of Boston Health AI, has been named the Inaugural Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) at The Carle Illinois College of Medicine (CI-MED), the world’s first engineering-based medical school. Based in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, CI-MED is pioneering a new model of medical education by integrating engineering, data science, and medicine to drive innovation in patient-centered care. In his new role, Dr. Haider will lead the strategic vision and responsible implementation of artificial intelligence across all facets of the college, including medical education, translational research, and clinical innovation. His appointment underscores CI-MED’s commitment to embedding AI as a core component of modern medicine, not just a supplementary tool. “Working across healthcare systems around the world has taught me that technology alone does not transform care; context, trust, and clinical reality do,” said Dr. Haider. “Artificial intelligence gives us a powerful opportunity to strengthen systems of care at scale, but only if it is built responsibly, governed thoughtfully, and grounded in real clinical needs.” CI-MED Dean Mark Cohen praised the appointment, stating, “By establishing the role of chief AI officer, Carle Illinois is signaling that artificial intelligence is not peripheral, but foundational to the future of medicine.” He highlighted Dr. Haider’s unique blend of clinical expertise, academic excellence, and entrepreneurial drive, noting that his leadership will ensure AI initiatives are both innovative and ethically sound, with a clear focus on improving health outcomes. In addition to his role as CAIO, Dr. Haider will serve as Medical Director for Informatics at Carle Foundation Hospital, bridging academic innovation with real-world clinical application. He will also hold a position as a Visiting Professor in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science within the Grainger College of Engineering, fostering deeper collaboration between medicine, engineering, and data science. Dr. Haider joins CI-MED after a transformative six-and-a-half-year tenure as Dean of Aga Khan University Medical College, where he quadrupled research funding, elevated the institution to top-100 global rankings, and secured multiple international accreditations. He has held senior academic and clinical positions at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Johns Hopkins University. In 2024, he founded Boston Health AI, a health-tech company operating in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan. The company is dedicated to developing end-to-end clinical support tools that enhance care efficiency, quality, and health equity for one billion people worldwide. With over 450 peer-reviewed publications to his name, Dr. Haider remains deeply committed to advancing ethical, scalable AI solutions that deliver meaningful impact across global healthcare systems.
