X Notification System Malfunctions, Disrupting User Updates and Essential Alerts
Notifications on X have been experiencing significant issues since Thursday afternoon, disrupting users' ability to stay updated with posts from accounts they follow. Reports of these problems have flooded Reddit and X itself, with many users noting a lack of notifications even when accounts they follow have posted multiple times. My colleagues at The Verge have observed similar issues, with no new notifications despite having alerts enabled. The malfunctioning notification system not only affects personal updates but also critical alerts from essential services such as public transportation companies, emergency weather services, and other important providers. While some notifications for user tags seem to be working, others for new likes and followers have been notably absent for nearly a full day. Some users have reported receiving delayed notifications, sometimes appearing several hours after the actual activity. As of 6:04 AM ET on Friday, X's owner, Elon Musk, posted an update indicating that users should be noticing improvements in the quality of recommendations in their timeline. However, the company has not yet acknowledged the notification issues or provided any timeline for resolving them. We have contacted X and will update this report if we receive any further information. This outage highlights the importance of a reliable notification system, especially for platforms like X where real-time updates are crucial for both personal and safety-related communications. Users are currently left in the dark, unsure if and when the issues will be fixed, and this uncertainty can have far-reaching consequences, particularly for those relying on timely information from official sources.
