NetApp and AWS Enhance AI Workflows with S3 Access Points for FSx for ONTAP, Enabling Seamless Access to Enterprise Data for AI and Analytics
NetApp has announced a new integration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) that enables enterprises to seamlessly connect their NetApp ONTAP data—both in the cloud and on-premises—to AWS’s broad suite of AI, machine learning, and analytics services. The key enabler is Amazon S3 Access Points for Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, which allows file data stored in FSx for ONTAP to be accessed directly via the S3 API by AWS AI and analytics tools without requiring data movement. This advancement allows customers to leverage more than 100 exabytes of enterprise data stored on NetApp systems for transformative AI and analytics workloads, including generative AI applications. By using S3 Access Points, customers can treat their FSx for ONTAP file systems as if they were S3 buckets, enabling direct integration with S3-native services and third-party ISV applications. This simplifies workflows, reduces latency, and accelerates time-to-insight. Pravjit Tiwana, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cloud Storage and Services at NetApp, said the integration is a game changer, especially for hybrid cloud environments. It allows enterprises to keep data in place while unlocking the power of cloud-based AI and analytics, with the added benefit of built-in data security and cyber resilience. NetApp ONTAP’s real-time ransomware detection, automated snapshots, and data protection features remain active, ensuring data integrity and security. The solution also supports data mobility across hybrid cloud environments through built-in replication capabilities in ONTAP, making it easier for customers to access on-premises data from AWS services. With fine-grained access control, users can create named access points with tailored permissions for different applications or teams, streamlining data governance and security. Jasdeep Singh, Research Manager at IDC, highlighted the strategic value of the collaboration between NetApp and AWS. He noted that the integration combines AWS’s cloud scale and innovation with NetApp’s proven data management and enterprise-grade reliability, giving organizations the tools to modernize workloads efficiently and adapt to evolving demands. As a leader in enterprise storage and the only provider with a first-party data storage service natively built on AWS, NetApp is uniquely positioned to help enterprises unlock value from their data across environments. The new capability is part of NetApp’s broader strategy to deliver an intelligent, unified data platform that powers AI, ensures resilience, and enables innovation.
