Anthropic CEO Warns AI Could Eliminate Half of Entry-Level Jobs Within Five Years
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has reiterated his warnings about the potential for artificial intelligence to displace millions of jobs, particularly in entry-level white-collar roles. Speaking at the Axios AI+ DC Summit, Amodei emphasized that the rapid pace of AI advancement makes it essential to sound the alarm. "As with most things, when an exponential is moving very quickly, you can't be sure," he said. "I think it is likely enough to happen that we felt there was a need to warn the world about it and to speak honestly." Amodei was joined by Jack Clark, Anthropic’s head of policy, who echoed the call for urgent policy action. Clark stressed that the scale of disruption expected in the next five years demands a proactive response from governments and institutions. Both leaders are part of a growing group of tech executives warning that AI could significantly reshape the job market. Amodei previously told Axios in May that AI could eliminate up to half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years. He also projected that unemployment could rise to between 10% and 20% during that period. He has cited fields such as law, finance, and consulting as particularly vulnerable to automation. When asked about his so-called "(p)doom number"—a measure of how likely he believes AI could lead to catastrophic outcomes—Amodei said he estimates a 25% chance that AI could go "really, really badly." At the same time, he expressed optimism, stating there is a 75% chance that AI developments will lead to overwhelmingly positive outcomes. Their remarks highlight a growing tension in the AI community: while the technology promises transformative benefits, its rapid development raises serious concerns about economic disruption, workforce displacement, and long-term safety. Amodei and Clark argue that transparency and early policy planning are critical to ensuring AI’s benefits are realized while minimizing harm.
