LegalOn Becomes Fastest AI Company in Japan to Hit ¥10 Billion ARR, Marking Global Rise in Legal Tech Innovation
LegalOn Technologies has announced it has surpassed ¥10 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR), equivalent to approximately $67 million, making it the fastest AI company founded in Japan to reach this milestone. The achievement comes just months after the company closed a $50 million Series E funding round, bringing its total funding to $200 million. LegalOn’s platform is now used by over 7,000 legal teams worldwide, including more than 30% of Japan’s public companies and 87% of its Fortune 500 firms. By combining artificial intelligence with legal expertise developed by experienced attorneys, the platform reduces contract review time by up to 85%, enabling legal teams to work faster, minimize risk, and accelerate business operations. “Legal teams around the world are overwhelmed by repetitive, time-consuming tasks, and they need AI they can trust to handle them,” said Daniel Lewis, Global CEO of LegalOn. “This milestone proves that integrating AI with vetted, attorney-built content delivers real value—empowering legal professionals to work more efficiently and with greater confidence.” Founded in Tokyo in 2017 by two corporate lawyers frustrated by the inefficiencies and risks of manual contract review, LegalOn began as a solution to a pressing problem: lengthy review cycles, human error, and bottlenecks in deal execution. After two years of research and development, the company launched its first AI-powered contract review tool in 2019, quickly gaining traction across Japan. By the time generative AI gained widespread attention in 2022, LegalOn was already a leader in legal AI innovation, introducing advanced capabilities such as AI-driven contract editing and automated redlining. Over time, the platform evolved beyond contract review to become a comprehensive legal AI solution for business legal teams, now supporting matter management, contract lifecycle management, compliance, and more. This rapid product evolution and strong customer adoption enabled LegalOn to achieve ¥10 billion in ARR in just six and a half years—faster than any other AI company founded in Japan. The company has also expanded globally, establishing offices and hiring teams in the United States and the United Kingdom to serve international clients. Strategic partnerships, including one with OpenAI, and its recent funding round are expected to fuel further global expansion and ongoing investment in AI innovation. “We reached this milestone because of the trust our customers place in us and the dedication of our team to redefining how legal work is done,” said Nozomu Tsunoda, co-founder and Group CEO of LegalOn. “Our core values—craftsmanship, precision, speed, and unwavering attention to legal quality—are what drive our success around the world.” LegalOn is a global leader in legal AI, bringing together trusted legal content, advanced artificial intelligence, and the expertise of legal professionals to streamline contracting and reduce risk. With headquarters in San Francisco and Tokyo, and backing from top investors including Goldman Sachs and SoftBank, LegalOn continues to transform the legal function for organizations worldwide.
