Homebase Launches AI-Powered Payroll Assistant to Simplify Small Business Payroll Processing

Homebase, the all-in-one platform for payroll, team management, and hiring, has launched its new Payroll Assistant, an AI-powered tool designed to simplify and streamline payroll preparation for small businesses. With over $5 billion in gross payroll processed since 2022 and more than 7 million paychecks issued, the company is advancing its platform to make payroll faster, smarter, and more accurate. The Payroll Assistant uses artificial intelligence to identify and resolve timecard issues before they become payroll errors. It automatically detects common problems such as missed breaks, late clock-ins, or missing clock-outs, and prompts employees to correct them in real time. This proactive approach helps prevent costly mistakes and reduces the time managers spend reviewing time records. The tool delivers a clear, easy-to-understand summary of payroll data, eliminating the need to manually comb through individual timecards. In addition to error detection, the Payroll Assistant will soon offer AI-driven insights that go beyond basic spreadsheets. These insights will help business owners understand the root causes of labor cost spikes, recurring payroll errors, and compliance risks, while providing tailored, actionable recommendations to address them. “Payroll has always been a pain point for small businesses, with fragmented systems and manual workflows,” said John Waldmann, CEO of Homebase. “Our new Payroll Assistant, part of a growing suite of AI tools, helps catch issues early, reduces administrative burden, and gives owners confidence in their payroll process. This is a key step toward our goal of saving small businesses 100 million hours annually—time that can be reinvested in their teams, growth, and communities.” In the past year, Homebase users have recorded 1.2 billion hours across time sheets for 3.5 million employees. Customers using Homebase Payroll already save an average of five hours per month by consolidating scheduling, time tracking, and payroll in a single platform. Early beta users of the Payroll Assistant are saving nearly two additional hours each month, amounting to 80 hours—equivalent to two full work weeks—per year. The Payroll Assistant is currently in beta and will roll out to customers on select plans in December.
