NotebookLM’s Video Overviews Get Smarter with Nano Banana and New Brief Format

NotebookLM has rolled out a major upgrade to its Video Overviews feature, powered by Gemini’s latest image generation model, Nano Banana. The update enhances how users interact with their uploaded documents by turning them into engaging, narrated videos with richer visuals and new customization options. With Nano Banana, Video Overviews now generate more contextually accurate and visually appealing illustrations that help users better understand and remember key information. The feature now supports six distinct visual styles: Watercolor, Papercraft, Anime, Whiteboard, Retro Print, and Heritage, allowing users to choose a look that best fits their content or personal preference. In addition to improved visuals, NotebookLM introduces a new "Brief" format designed for quick insights. While the existing "Explainer" format delivers a detailed, structured summary ideal for deep dives, the new "Brief" version offers a concise, fast-paced overview perfect for grasping core ideas in minutes. To create a Video Overview, users simply select their sources in NotebookLM and click the "Video Overview" button. They can then customize the output by choosing the desired format and visual style, or even apply specific instructions such as “Focus only on the cost analysis sections of the business plan” or “Turn these recipes into an easy-to-follow video highlighting prep time and cooking steps.” The update marks a significant step in NotebookLM’s mission to make complex information more accessible by transforming dense documents into dynamic, multimedia experiences. The enhanced Video Overviews will begin rolling out to Pro users this week across all supported languages, with broader availability expected in the coming weeks.
