OpenAI Launches App Store for ChatGPT, Aiming to Make It a Universal Frontend

OpenAI has launched a major new feature that transforms ChatGPT into an app-like platform, allowing users to interact directly with third-party services without leaving the chat interface. At its DevDay event, the company unveiled integrations with popular apps including Spotify, Canva, Zillow, Expedia, Booking.com, Coursera, Figma, and others, marking a significant step toward building what CEO Sam Altman described as an “app store for AI.” With over 800 million weekly users, ChatGPT now supports direct interactions with external platforms through natural language commands. Users can now ask ChatGPT to perform actions like creating a Spotify playlist based on mood or genre, generating a Canva design for an Instagram post, searching for homes on Zillow matching specific criteria, booking a hotel via Expedia, or accessing learning content from Coursera—all within the chat. The integrations work by connecting user accounts to the respective services, enabling seamless, real-time interactions. For example, Spotify users can get personalized music recommendations based on prior conversations, while Canva integration lets users generate and refine visual designs directly in ChatGPT before exporting to the full Canva editor. The new functionality is powered by an open SDK (software development kit) that allows developers to build custom apps for ChatGPT. OpenAI plans to begin accepting app submissions later this year, with a public directory where users can browse and discover tools. Apps that meet higher standards for design, usefulness, and trustworthiness will be highlighted both in the directory and within ChatGPT itself. OpenAI emphasized that apps should enhance user experience through interactivity and personalization—such as booking rides, ordering food, tracking deliveries, or checking availability—while avoiding long-form content, complex workflows, ads, or irrelevant messaging. Monetization is also on the horizon. OpenAI announced new commerce features that will allow users to make purchases directly through ChatGPT, with developers able to earn revenue from app usage. This could position OpenAI as a major player in digital marketplaces, potentially challenging established app stores like Apple’s App Store and Google Play, which rely on commission-based revenue models. While the initial rollout includes major partners like Spotify, Canva, and Zillow, more services are expected later this year, including Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, OpenTable, Target, Peloton, Tripadvisor, AllTrails, and Khan Academy. However, the feature is currently unavailable to users in the European Union due to regulatory considerations. The move reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy to turn ChatGPT into a central hub for digital interaction, blending AI intelligence with real-world functionality. By enabling users to chat with apps rather than navigate separate interfaces, OpenAI aims to create a more intuitive, adaptive, and personalized experience. Altman described this as the beginning of a new generation of AI-powered applications that evolve with user needs. While the integrations represent a leap forward in usability and convenience, they also raise questions about data privacy, platform control, and the long-term impact on app ecosystems. As OpenAI expands its reach, the success of this initiative will depend on developer adoption, user trust, and the ability to balance innovation with responsible design. With its growing user base and strategic partnerships, OpenAI is positioning itself not just as an AI provider, but as a new kind of digital infrastructure.
