Cloudflare says AI eliminated 1,100 jobs

Cloudflare announced its largest workforce reduction in company history on Thursday, cutting 1,100 employees representing approximately 20% of its staff. The layoffs occurred alongside a record-breaking quarter for the internet security and performance provider. CEO Matthew Prince attributed the decision directly to the integration of artificial intelligence, marking a distinct shift in how the tech giant operates. During its first-quarter 2026 earnings report, Cloudflare posted revenue of $639.8 million, a 34% increase year-over-year and the highest single quarter in its 16-year history. Prince explicitly stated that the restructuring is not a cost-cutting measure or a reflection of individual performance. Instead, he described it as an adaptation to the agentic AI era. He noted that internal AI adoption surged by over 600% in the last three months alone. The company observed productivity gains that ranged from two to 100 times improvement for employees utilizing AI tools, likening the impact to upgrading from manual to electric screwdrivers. Specifically, Cloudflare's engineering teams now rely on the company's Workers platform for coding, utilizing features like "vibe coding" to generate software directly on the global network. Prince revealed that 100% of code produced this way is currently reviewed by autonomous AI agents. This efficiency extends beyond engineering to finance, HR, and marketing, where thousands of daily AI agent sessions help staff complete tasks. Prince argued that the rise of these AI-powered workflows has reduced the need for traditional support roles that previously assisted teams. Despite the massive layoffs, which reduced the workforce from approximately 5,500 at the start of the quarter, Cloudflare plans to continue hiring. Prince expressed confidence that the company will expand again, predicting that by 2027, the headcount could exceed any level seen in 2026. The strategy focuses on investing in employees who embrace these new tools, as their enhanced productivity drives future growth. This pattern mirrors a broader trend across the technology sector, where companies like Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon have also reported revenue growth alongside significant layoffs, citing AI efficiency as the driver. While Cloudflare's financial growth is robust, the simultaneous reduction in staff raises questions about the long-term structural changes in the industry.
