Top-Paying AI Internships and Fellowships for 2026: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta Offer Six-Figure Stipends and Research Opportunities

In the fierce competition to lead the next wave of artificial intelligence, internships, fellowships, and residency programs have become high-stakes entry points for top talent—offering compensation that rivals full-time salaries in other industries. Tech giants and leading AI labs are investing heavily not only in established experts but also in identifying and nurturing emerging talent through elite, well-paid development programs. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta are among the companies offering some of the most lucrative opportunities in 2026. These programs are designed to attract the brightest minds in computer science, machine learning, and AI safety, often providing not just competitive pay but also access to world-class mentorship, cutting-edge research, and substantial resources. One standout is the Anthropic AI Safety Fellows Program, a four-month, full-time research fellowship aimed at accelerating progress in AI safety. The program, which has seen over 80% of past participants publish research, offers direct mentorship from leading figures such as Jan Leike, Sam Bowman, Sara Price, Alex Tamkin, and Nina Panickssery. Fellows receive a weekly stipend of $3,850, $15,000 per month in compute funding, and access to workspace in Berkeley or London. Applications for the May and July 2026 cohorts are open until January 12, 2026. At OpenAI, the Residency Program provides early-career researchers with intensive mentorship and the chance to contribute to foundational AI research. Residents work closely with senior scientists and gain hands-on experience in areas like alignment, model architecture, and training methodologies. Google’s Student Researcher Program targets U.S.-based Ph.D. students in computer science and related fields. Selected candidates work on advanced projects across AI and machine learning, with opportunities to collaborate with Google researchers on impactful work. The program emphasizes innovation and academic rigor. Meta offers multiple pathways for aspiring AI researchers. Its Research Scientist Internships span 12 to 24 weeks and come with monthly compensation ranging from $7,650 to over $12,000, depending on experience and location. Interns focus on critical areas like natural language processing, generative modeling, computer vision, and neural rendering. Meta also runs a Visiting Ph.D. Researcher Program, allowing students from top institutions—including UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, the University of Washington, and NYU’s Courant Institute and Center for Data Science—to work part-time during the academic year and full-time over the summer. The 2026–2027 cohort applications opened on November 17 and close on January 9, with the program beginning in the fall. These programs reflect a broader trend: AI companies are no longer just hiring for experience—they’re investing in the future of the field by identifying and empowering the next generation of innovators. With pay packages that can exceed $400,000 for senior roles and generous stipends for early-career researchers, the race for talent has never been more intense.
