OpenAI Launches Academy for News Organizations to Empower Journalists with AI Tools and Practical Training

OpenAI is launching the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations, a new initiative designed to support journalism as a cornerstone of democracy. Recognizing that reliable local and national reporting helps people understand their communities and the world, OpenAI is committed to partnering with news organizations to strengthen their work and foster innovation across the industry. The Academy was unveiled yesterday at the AI and Journalism Summit, co-hosted by OpenAI, the Brown Institute for Media Innovation, and Hearst. The event brought together leaders from newsrooms, academia, and technology to discuss the future of AI in journalism. Today, the Academy goes live with a suite of practical resources, including hands-on training, step-by-step playbooks, and real-world examples that help news teams save time and focus on high-impact reporting—spanning everything from fact-finding and investigative work to business and operational challenges. At launch, the Academy offers tools to help newsrooms integrate AI responsibly into their workflows. It builds on years of collaboration with the journalism community, including ongoing partnerships with the American Journalism Project and The Lenfest Institute, which support local news organizations in using AI to enhance research, accelerate product development, and explore new models for sustainability. These efforts, along with global collaborations with publishers and industry groups, have informed the Academy’s focus on practical guidance, transparency, and learning rooted in real newsroom needs. As AI continues to transform newsrooms, the Academy aims to address key concerns around trust, accuracy, and workforce impact by providing clear, actionable support. OpenAI has long invested in a healthy news ecosystem. It has helped more than 800 million weekly ChatGPT users access timely, high-quality information from trusted news sources. Current partnerships include News Corp, Axios, the Financial Times, Condé Nast, and Hearst. Additional collaborations with organizations such as the American Journalism Project, The Lenfest Institute, WAN-IFRA, and INMA are driving shared learning and capacity building across regions and languages. Today, content from these partners is available in over 20 languages. Over the next year, OpenAI plans to expand the Academy with new courses, in-depth case studies, and live programming to further empower journalists and news organizations worldwide. Through this initiative, OpenAI aims to equip reporters and editors with the tools they need to do their work more effectively and help newsrooms build a resilient, AI-enabled future.
