Brilliant Releases Second-Gen Smart Home Control Panels with Enhanced Resolution and Dual-Band WiFi

Brilliant NextGen, a company known for its smart home controllers, has introduced the second generation of its innovative touchscreen panels. These panels are designed to replace traditional light switches and offer a significant upgrade over the previous model, including a fourfold increase in screen resolution, dual-band WiFi for better connectivity, and a more powerful processor to support future AI-powered features. Despite these enhancements, Brilliant has not yet announced specific details or timelines for new software capabilities, and the current version operates similarly to the first generation. In an interview with The Verge, Erin Wright, Brilliant's head of marketing, highlighted that the new panels are expected to reduce latency issues experienced with some devices in the past. This improvement is particularly promising given that the previous model was often slow and unresponsive during testing. The panels can control a variety of smart home devices, such as Philips Hue lights and Sonos speakers, making them a versatile addition to any connected home. Brilliant faced a significant setback earlier this year, nearly going out of business in 2024. However, the company was rescued by two private investment firms, Almeida Strategic Investments and Cullinan Holdings, through an acquisition for an undisclosed amount. This timely intervention allowed Brilliant to continue developing and refining its product line. The new smart panels are now available for purchase and immediate shipment. Additionally, Brilliant offers several bundles that include screenless switches, typically priced at $69.99 each, with savings of up to $96. For those wary of DIY electrical installations, the company has introduced a plug-in version of the panel for $329. This variant includes two smart plug outlets, making it an easy and convenient option for integrating smart home functionalities without the need for additional wiring. Overall, these upgrades and the new plug-in version make Brilliant’s smart home panels more appealing and user-friendly, addressing key issues from the first generation and expanding accessibility for a wider range of users.
