Phenom Unveils First AI Fraud Detection Agent to Combat Rising Candidate Fraud in Hiring

Phenom, an applied AI company focused on transforming talent acquisition and development, has launched its first AI-powered fraud detection agent designed to combat a growing crisis of candidate deception in hiring. The new tool, called the Phenom Fraud Detection Agent, is the industry’s first comprehensive solution capable of identifying resume fraud, AI-generated interview responses, and imposter candidates in real time. According to Gartner, by 2028, one in four job candidates globally could be fake, resulting in millions of dollars in losses for U.S. employers annually. The new agent is built to protect organizations across high-risk sectors such as healthcare, financial services, retail, manufacturing, hospitality, and travel—industries where employees handle sensitive data or critical operations. Kumar Ananthanarayana, VP and GM of Product Management at Phenom, emphasized the urgency of the issue: “Organizations need to address the surge in sophisticated hiring fraud, particularly in industries where workers handle highly sensitive information or organizations that depend on remote work.” The Fraud Detection Agent integrates with Phenom’s Interview Intelligence platform to analyze candidate behavior during live video interviews. It uses advanced multimodal analysis to detect multiple red flags, including: Identity and Location Verification: Using facial recognition and voice matching, the system confirms that the same individual participates in all stages of the hiring process, preventing identity substitution. AI-Generated Response Detection: It identifies responses that mimic the patterns of large language models—such as unnatural pauses, overly formal language, and rigid structure—by prompting real-time follow-up questions to assess authenticity. Multi-Modal Cross-Referencing: The agent compares data across resumes, portfolios, and interview answers to spot inconsistencies and potential deception. Beyond real-time monitoring, the system delivers detailed post-interview reports that compile all fraud indicators throughout the candidate journey. These insights help recruiters and hiring managers make informed decisions while ensuring human oversight remains central to final hiring choices. The launch comes amid rising concerns over remote hiring vulnerabilities. In a notable case, the U.S. Justice Department accused North Korean nationals of using stolen identities to secure remote IT jobs at over 100 U.S. companies, highlighting the national security implications of unchecked hiring fraud. By enabling secure, reliable video interviews with built-in fraud detection and bias indicators, Phenom’s solution helps companies maintain hiring speed and efficiency without sacrificing integrity. The platform also includes AI-driven interview guides and updated fit scores based on real-time responses, improving both candidate experience and decision quality. Phenom is offering a live global event, AI Day, on October 1, where attendees can explore real-world applications of AI in HR, including the Fraud Detection Agent. The company continues to expand its suite of AI tools to support smarter, safer, and more human-centered talent practices. Headquartered in Greater Philadelphia, Phenom operates offices in India, Israel, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The company has received numerous awards for innovation, including multiple Brandon Hall Excellence in Technology awards, Deloitte Technology Fast 500 honors, and recognition from the Business Intelligence Group and The A.I. Awards. For more information, visit www.phenom.com and follow Phenom on LinkedIn, X, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.
