Gemini lets you import chats and data from other chatbots

Google announced the launch of new switching tools on Thursday, designed to simplify the migration of user data from competing AI chatbots to its Gemini platform. In the intensifying race for consumer attention, Google aims to lower the barrier for users currently using rivals like ChatGPT or Claude to defect to Gemini. These new widgets allow individuals to transfer personal memories, such as key preferences, relationship details, and context, along with entire chat histories. The functionality operates through a guided process. Gemini provides a specific prompt that users can enter into their existing chatbot. The rival system then generates a response containing the user's personal data, which can be copied and pasted back into Gemini. This method helps users efficiently transfer information about their interests, family members, and background, allowing the assistant to bypass the usual retraining phase required to understand a new user. For those wishing to import full conversation logs, Google enables users to upload chat data exported as zip files from other services. Once imported, users can search through these past conversations, facilitating a seamless transition where they can pick up right where they left off without losing context. This strategic move addresses a current market imbalance. While OpenAI's ChatGPT recently reported 900 million weekly active users, Gemini has struggled to match this mindshare despite Google's inherent advantages, such as default integration across Android devices and the Chrome browser. During its parent company Alphabet's fourth-quarter earnings call, Google revealed that Gemini had surpassed 750 million monthly active users. However, the gap in consumer loyalty remains significant. By making data portability a core feature, Google hopes to accelerate user acquisition and solidify Gemini's position in the competitive AI landscape. The company emphasizes that these tools are intended to make adoption easier, removing the friction of rebuilding a digital persona from scratch and ensuring the assistant immediately understands what matters most to the user.
