Amazon Launches AI-Powered Smart Glasses for Delivery Drivers to Enhance Efficiency and Safety

Amazon has unveiled a new line of AI-powered smart glasses designed specifically for its delivery drivers. The wearable technology aims to enhance efficiency and safety by offering a hands-free experience that reduces the need to constantly switch between a phone, packages, and the surrounding environment. The glasses use AI-driven computer vision and built-in cameras to provide real-time visual guidance. Delivery drivers can scan packages, follow turn-by-turn walking directions, and capture proof of delivery—all without touching their phones. The display overlays critical information directly into the driver’s field of view, including navigation cues, potential hazards, and delivery tasks. When a driver arrives at a delivery location, the glasses automatically activate. They help locate the correct package inside the delivery vehicle and guide the driver to the exact delivery address, even in complex environments like multi-unit apartment buildings or large office complexes. The system adapts to dynamic conditions, such as low light, and can detect obstacles or pets in yards, alerting the driver accordingly. The glasses are paired with a compact controller worn on the delivery vest. This controller includes operational buttons, a swappable battery, and a dedicated emergency button for quick assistance. The glasses are also compatible with prescription lenses and transitional lenses that automatically adjust to changing lighting conditions. Amazon is currently testing the smart glasses with delivery drivers across North America. The company plans to refine the technology based on feedback before a broader rollout. The announcement follows a Reuters report from last year that Amazon was developing such a device. The company envisions future capabilities, including real-time defect detection—alerting drivers if a package is delivered to the wrong address—and enhanced hazard awareness. On the same day, Amazon introduced “Blue Jay,” a new robotic arm designed to assist warehouse workers. Blue Jay can reach shelves, pick items, and sort them efficiently, working alongside human employees to improve throughput. Additionally, Amazon launched Eluna, a new AI-powered tool intended to deliver actionable operational insights across its warehouse network. By analyzing real-time data, Eluna helps optimize workflows, reduce delays, and improve overall efficiency in fulfillment centers.
