OpenAI Launches Free One-Year ChatGPT Go Plan for Indian Users to Boost Market Growth

OpenAI is offering its ChatGPT Go subscription plan free of charge for one year to users in India who sign up during a limited promotional period beginning November 4. The initiative aims to expand OpenAI’s footprint in one of its most important markets. The company did not disclose how long the offer will remain active, but existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also qualify for the complimentary 12-month plan. Priced at less than $5 per month, ChatGPT Go launched in India in August as the company’s most affordable paid tier. Since then, it has been rolled out to Indonesia and 16 additional Asian countries earlier this month. India, the world’s most populous nation with over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet subscribers, has become a strategic priority for OpenAI. The company opened a New Delhi office in August and is actively building a local team to strengthen its presence. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that India is the company’s second-largest market after the United States. Despite strong user engagement—ChatGPT recorded over 29 million downloads in the 90 days leading up to August—monetization has been difficult. During that period, the app generated only $3.6 million in in-app purchases, according to data from Appfigures reviewed by TechCrunch. ChatGPT Go provides users with 10 times more usage than the free version, enabling enhanced capabilities for generating responses, creating images, and uploading files. It also includes improved memory features for more personalized and context-aware interactions. Nick Turley, vice president and head of ChatGPT, said in a statement, “Since initially launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from our users has been inspiring. We’re excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools.” OpenAI’s competitors are also targeting India’s vast and youthful digital population. Perplexity recently partnered with telecom giant Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to its 360 million customers. Google has similarly launched a free one-year AI Pro plan for students across the country. OpenAI is set to host its DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where it is expected to unveil India-specific initiatives aimed at local developers and enterprises. The company highlights India as one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT, with millions of users engaging with the chatbot daily.
