Apple to Transform Siri into AI Chatbot Ahead of WWDC 2025, Report Says

Apple is reportedly planning to transform its long-standing virtual assistant, Siri, into an AI-powered chatbot similar to ChatGPT, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The revamped Siri, internally codenamed “Campos,” is expected to be a central feature of iOS 27 and could take center stage at Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. The new version of Siri will support both voice and text inputs, allowing users to engage in more natural, conversational interactions. This marks a significant shift from Apple’s previous approach, as senior vice president Craig Federighi had previously expressed skepticism about turning Siri into a traditional chatbot. He had emphasized the importance of integrating AI capabilities seamlessly into the user experience—“there within reach whenever you need it”—rather than making it a standalone conversational tool. However, increasing competition from rivals has prompted Apple to rethink its strategy. The rapid rise of AI chatbots from companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic has put pressure on Apple to accelerate its own AI ambitions. The company has been notably behind in the AI race, delaying the rollout of a more personalized Siri multiple times and spending much of the past year evaluating potential AI partners. Apple ultimately chose Google’s Gemini as its primary AI partner, a decision confirmed earlier this month by both companies. This collaboration is expected to power new AI features across Apple’s ecosystem. Despite this partnership, the development of a chatbot-style Siri suggests Apple is pursuing a more ambitious vision for its assistant—one that directly competes with the capabilities of today’s leading AI models. Adding to the urgency, OpenAI is reportedly planning to enter the hardware space, led by Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief. This potential move could pose a direct threat to Apple’s dominance in consumer electronics and further incentivize the company to strengthen its AI offerings quickly. With the new Siri chatbot, Apple aims to not only catch up but also redefine how users interact with AI on their devices—blending the personalization of a chatbot with the seamless integration Apple is known for.
