Zuckerberg Pushes AI-Generated Content Across Meta Platforms as Social Media Enters New Era
Mark Zuckerberg is preparing to flood social feeds across Meta’s platforms with even more AI-generated content. Speaking during an earnings call on Wednesday, Zuckerberg revealed that the company plans to introduce “yet another huge corpus of content” into its recommendation systems, driven by AI’s ability to make content creation and remixing easier than ever. He described the evolution of social media in two distinct phases: the first, when content came exclusively from friends, family, and accounts users followed directly; and the second, when the platform expanded to include content from creators. While he didn’t explicitly label AI as the “third era” of social media, the direction is clear—AI is set to play a central role in shaping the next chapter. Zuckerberg emphasized that recommendation systems capable of deeply understanding AI-generated posts will become increasingly valuable. Meta has already integrated AI tools across its apps, and is now testing dedicated AI-powered social platforms. Meta’s Chief Financial Officer, Susan Li, shared that users generated over 20 billion images within the company’s new Vibes app—a platform that delivers a stream of AI-generated videos, similar in concept to OpenAI’s Sora. “I think that Vibes is an example of a new content type enabled by AI, and I think that there are more opportunities to build many more novel types of content ahead,” Zuckerberg said. The company reported quarterly revenue of $51.24 billion, a 26% increase compared to the same period last year. However, Meta also recorded a one-time tax charge of $15.93 billion tied to President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill. Despite the charge, the results reflect strong growth in user engagement and AI-driven product development.
