Google Unveils Gemini-Powered Smart Home Lineup Including New Nest Cameras and Home Speaker

Google has launched a new generation of Nest security devices, including the Nest Cam Indoor 2K, Nest Cam Outdoor 2K, and Nest Doorbell 2K, marking the first time the company has introduced 2K resolution to its lineup. All three devices are designed specifically for Google’s AI-powered Gemini for Home platform and are now available for purchase. The indoor camera is priced at $99.99, the outdoor model at $149.99 (with a two-pack option at $249), and the doorbell at $179.99. While only the wired versions are being refreshed, all existing Nest cameras dating back to 2015 will eventually support Gemini for Home. The new cameras feature updated designs with fresh color options—Berry for the indoor model, Hazel for the outdoor and doorbell—and a reformulated UV-resistant resin to prevent yellowing over time. They now offer 2K HDR video, wider fields of view (152 degrees for the outdoor cam, 166 degrees diagonal for the doorbell), and improved low-light performance thanks to a new wide-aperture sensor. A new zoom-and-crop feature automatically focuses on alert-triggering objects like people or pets and can stay zoomed in. Google has also doubled free video clip storage, expanding motion-activated recordings from three to six hours. The real innovation lies in AI-powered intelligence. Gemini for Home uses generative AI to transform basic alerts into descriptive summaries—instead of “animal detected,” users now see “dog jumps out of playpen.” These AI-generated descriptions power a new “Home Brief” feature in the Google Home app, which delivers customizable daily summaries of home activity, helping reduce notification overload. These advanced features require the top-tier Google Home Premium Advanced plan at $20 per month, which includes 60 days of event history, 24/7 recording, and video search via the new “Ask Home” chatbot. The Google Home app has been completely redesigned with a streamlined interface, reduced from five to three tabs—Home, Activity, and Automations—and now supports swipe navigation and natural language automation creation. The app also integrates Gemini Live and supports one-time and conditional automations. The new “Ask Home” feature lets users query home events or search video footage using voice or text. In addition to the cameras, Google is introducing the Google Home Speaker, built specifically for Gemini. It features a dynamic light ring for visual feedback, physical mic mute, 360° audio, and the ability to pair with a Google TV Streamer for surround sound. It will launch in Spring 2026 for $99 in multiple countries. Privacy and sustainability are central to the new devices. All cameras use end-to-end encryption by default, feature green LEDs to indicate when recording, and are made with recycled materials. Packaging is 100% plastic-free, using recyclable paper and molded fiber. Google Home Premium replaces Nest Aware, with two tiers: Standard ($10/month) and Advanced ($20/month). These are now bundled into Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) and AI Ultra ($250/month), with Home Premium included at no extra cost for Ultra subscribers. Gemini for Home features are rolling out first in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, and Australia, with other regions getting updates in early 2026. This launch marks a major step toward a truly conversational, context-aware smart home powered by Google’s most advanced AI yet.
