Generative AI has shifted the focus from collaboration to completion, but the most effective AI interactions are those that balance both. Early chatbots were inherently collaborative not by design, but because of technical limitations. They could only handle simple, single-intent inputs and required users to break down their goals into small, manageable steps. This created a natural rhythm of back-and-forth dialogue, where both user and AI gradually co-created solutions. With the rise of large language models, that dynamic changed. Modern GenAI systems can process vast amounts of context in one prompt, enabling them to generate detailed, seemingly complete outputs without ongoing interaction. Users now expect a single, polished answer after one input. While this feels efficient, it often misses the nuances of human intent—especially when goals are ambiguous or evolve during problem-solving. This shift has led to AI interfaces that prioritize final output over process. Many GenAI applications assume users know exactly what they want and can articulate it fully upfront. But real-world tasks—like planning a trip, writing code, or designing a product—are rarely that clear. Goals shift, priorities change, and assumptions surface only through dialogue. Recent research highlights a critical gap: AI systems are assessed primarily on whether they deliver a correct answer, not on how well they engage users throughout the journey.
