Google Unveils AI Shoe Try-On Feature for Shopping, Lets You Virtually Test Footwear Without Photos

Google is bringing AI-powered virtual try-ons to shoes, letting users visualize how new footwear might look without leaving home. When browsing shoes on Google Shopping, users can now tap the “try it on” button to see how a pair of heels, sneakers, or sandals could look on them. The feature works by using AI to generate a realistic image of the user wearing the selected shoes, seamlessly replacing the footwear in a photo. Notably, users don’t need to upload images of their feet—Google’s system can generate a pair of feet from a full-body photo. In one example, a user’s white sneakers are digitally transformed into a pair of black stilettos with open toes, all rendered in a natural and lifelike way. This functionality builds on Google’s earlier rollout of AI try-on for clothing, which began with shirts, pants, dresses, and skirts in May. That feature was made available to all users in the U.S. by July. Now, the company is expanding the experience to include shoes, with plans to launch the feature in Australia, Canada, and Japan in the coming weeks. Google’s AI model is designed to understand body proportions, fabric textures, and lighting to create convincing virtual outfits. The technology was also tested in the company’s Doppl app, where users can generate AI-driven clips of themselves wearing different outfits. Google emphasized that privacy is a priority—no personal data, including foot images, is stored or shared. The expansion of AI try-ons reflects Google’s broader push to enhance the shopping experience with generative AI, helping consumers make more confident purchasing decisions while reducing return rates.
