21-Year-Old Former MrBeast Staffer Launches AI Startup Palo to Help Creators Make Viral Videos
Jay Neo, a 21-year-old former MrBeast staffer, is launching Palo, an AI startup designed to help content creators make viral videos. Neo, a self-described "content nerd," became fascinated with what drives video virality during his teenage years, when he ran Minecraft Discord servers and created short-form content. He focused intensely on viewer retention—tracking where people dropped off in videos—to understand what kept audiences engaged. His deep dive into retention data helped him land a job at MrBeast at just 18, where he contributed to short-form content strategy. One standout project was the video "Would You Fly To Paris For A Baguette?" which surpassed 1 billion views. Neo helped refine the video’s format using a technique called "stair stepping," where offers escalate dramatically—a tactic adapted from TikTok trends and "Beastified" with absurdity. This approach became part of a broader formula the MrBeast team used to consistently produce high-performing content, backed by extensive data analysis. After leaving MrBeast and managing other content accounts, Neo teamed up with Shivam Pankaj Kumar, a former engineer at Microsoft and Palantir, and content creator Harry Jones to build Palo AI. The startup uses artificial intelligence to analyze a creator’s entire video catalog, identifying patterns in hooks, pacing, and engagement. The goal is not to replace creators but to help them make data-driven tweaks that boost views. Palo’s AI examines critical elements like the first few seconds of a video—the hook—and delivers insights in an easy-to-understand format. Creators can use the platform to write scripts, outline videos with storyboards, and connect with peers through Palo’s built-in network. The startup recently emerged from stealth with $3.8 million in funding from PeakXV, NFX, EdgeCase Capital, and angel investors including Rohan Kumar, former head of vertical platforms at MrBeast. Josh Constine, who invested via his fund Unexpected Investments, praised Palo for handling the time-consuming research behind viral trends, letting creators focus on their craft. The funding will support AI computing costs and hiring engineering talent. Palo’s small team of eight works out of a house in Palo Alto, California. The platform combines multiple AI models, including OpenAI and Google Gemini, and is currently available to creators with over 1 million followers, with plans to expand to those with 100,000 or more. A subscription model is set to launch at $250 per month. Neo envisions future features like niche-based creator matching and tools to connect creators with potential brand partners. While many AI tools help generate content, Palo stands out by helping established creators analyze and improve their existing work to break through the noise.
